ANIMAL lovers from all over the world gathered at the first Animal Star Awards last night in Guildford.

Mary Burgess set up the event to recognise amazing animals and people doing extraordinary things to help them.

There were categories for charities, vets, rescues, assistance animals, people in the pet industry and bloggers.

The star studded event was at the Mandolay Hotel and brought together entrepreneurs and pet owners with TV personalities like CBeebies vet Rory Cowlam and animal welfare campaigner Peter Egan.

Rachael Hawnt from BBC’s All Together Now sang in between the awards and the event raised money for IAPWA, The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, The Badger Trust, All Dogs Matter, The Donkey Sanctuary, Angels for the Innocent and The Wildheart Trust.

Mary says she was thrilled at how well the first event was received

Founder Mary said: “I’m so pleased that so many people travelled and made a special effort to come to the awards - it was a fantastic night.

“The idea to have them began nearly two years ago after I had a cancer scare, and shortly afterwards I learned my dog Gracie Lou had cancer.

“It made me want to do something special to recognise the extraordinary relationship we share with our animals. It’s been a lot of hard work but it was worth it.

“Next year, I hope the event will be bigger and better, with sponsors for each category and a ceremony in the North and the South.

“Our pets are our world and there are so many people doing fantastic things to support animals all over the world which we need to celebrate.”
